Toneelgroep Maastricht – How to Play Francesca Woodman
‘How To Play Francesca Woodman’, Toneelgroep Maastricht, 2014.
A theaterplay about a young photographer with an inimitable talent.
An intimite and physical theater play with text, music, movement and film. The play is based on the life and work of the American photographer Fransesca Woodman. Four yound actresses dive into the rich mind of the remarkable artist. The play is directed by Arie de Mol. Texts are written by Anne Vegter (poet laureate) and Erik-Ward Geerlings (Mephisto, Decamerone).
Nina spiering and Catharina Scholten made the stage design which resembles Francesca’s brain. Chaotic but with a lot of tools to create. Central on the stage are three big screens connected to three cameras. Almost all of Francesca’s foto’s are self portraits which she used to express her struggles. A link is easily made to the way young people use media to express themselves. The four Actrices pose, beg, scream, dance and curl before these cameras so that there cry for attention is enlarged on the screens behind them.
